Deafness in White cats
This can be detected with a simple test called a Baer (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) test, the pictures below show the test in progress and although it looks as if the kittens are in pain, they are not. Most kittens can have the test done without any sedation, I stay with my kittens to help them relax and keep them calm. At the bottom of the page you will find links to where the tests are carried out, if you know of any others please send me the details so they can be included here.
Above is the equipment used for the test

Needles are placed through the skin in 3 different locations, which is then connected to the equipment. The ear piece is held in the ear and as I understand it if the sounds are heard, a signal is then sent from the brain to the equipment which is recorded. At no time throughout the tests have I witnessed a kitten in pain even when the needles are inserted.
All cats and kittens must be microchipped for the test to ensure the certificate contains the correct information.
